Fluency, Accuracy and Competence in Speaking

Speaking is one of the ability of human being to communicate each other.

One of the most famous languages in the world which used by almost speaker is English.

Anyone can learn English. We are not just can speak English at school or Campus with our teacher or lecturer but also we can use it to speak with our parents, friends, etc. All you have to do is just speak the language. “English is a language and human being is born with the ability and the need to absorb and use language (Chomsky’s ideas in Cook, 2008).

But the problem is, you can find so many English speakers among you can speak English but they don’t have the competence in speaking, because of what? The can not speak fluently and accurately. So how to understand about this stuff?

Ladies and Gentleman, I’m Dandy, I’m going to explain about the fluency and accuracy, to make you have the competence in speaking.

Fluency in a language means speaking easily reasonably quickly and without having to stop and pause a lot, on another words you have to make your interlocutor understandable with what you said. "A person is said to be a fluent speaker of a language when he or she  can use its structures accurately whilst concentrating on content rather than form, using the units and patterns automatically at normal conversational speed when they are needed." (Hartmann & Stork, 1976).

there are many problems that you can find that makes the speaker can not speak fluently, for e.g. this is one of the example of problem that you can find. So its because of what? One of the reasons is Because the speaker have less vocabulary. So it makes them thinking too much about what words that they will say to the interlocutor. How can solve it?  They have to increase their vocabulary but not just it, they also don’t thinking too much, Don’t worry about making mistakes. The important thing is to communicate what the speaker want to say. because the fluent speaker just thinking about how they can make the interlocutor understandable with what they say.

Next, is accuracy. Accuracy refers to the mechanics of the language. a person is considered to speak accurately if he or she is clear in speaking, Language free from grammar mistakes, they also can arrange words spelled and/or pronounced correctly and not just speak as what they want but also they follow the rule of grammar.

So, In speaking fluently and accurately, the important thing is to create a balance between the two. The speaker have to make it balance so it can makes them become competence in speaking.
